Sycamore class enjoyed getting creative with Kapla blocks in ELLI time this week.

Subject specific information:

English

Writing:

In writing this week the children will revisit the story of ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’. They will design a new Flying Doctors outfit for Princess Pearl to help her cope with Zog’s bumpy landings! They will then need to use their persuasive letter writing skills to write to the King to convince him to manufacture their design. To conclude this block of work, the children will present their persuasive letters to their friends. We will then begin to look at the different job roles found within a castle and compare similarities and differences between life in Medieval and modern times.

Reading:

Guided reading sessions will be accompanied by activities linked to previously taught grammar.

This week this will involve writing kind words on odd socks to link with Friendship Week. We will also be practising writing common exception words: people, were, said and some and looking for personalised ones in our English book that teachers have identified as needing correcting. There will be a free writing opportunity linked to a dragon story, and some caption and sentence writing about knights and castles. Children are encouraged to work towards a suitable challenge level matched to the Guided Reading task.

Phonics:

This week we are learning these phonemes and linked spelling rules:

Monday: st (listen)

Tuesday: z (please)

Wednesday: u (some)

Thursday:ee (happy/ donkey)

Friday: ear (here/ dear)

As part of our daily recall, children are reading common exception words. Whilst most children are confident at reading them, we really want this to be evident in spelling when writing. Please support your child with spelling the following words correctly when they are doing any writing at home.

Maths

In maths this week we will continue our work on 2D and 3d shapes. Our lesson objectives for the week are:

  • Count money -pence
  • Count money -pounds
  • Count money -pounds and pence
  • Choose notes and coins
  • Make the same amount

If you want to support your child with their learning you can visit https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/search?q=coins&page=1  together.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World (Topic)

In KUW this week the children will undertake an investigation ‘testing rigidity’. This will link nicely to our English work this week.

They will also finish off their block of coding work from last week – putting their understanding of commands and algorithms into practice.

Religion and World Views

In R+WV this week the children will learn about remembrance and death through the beautiful story “Waterbugs and Dragonflies”. This lesson is centred around the Christian belief about what happens after life.

The children will also take part in “Interfaith Week” via an online whole class lesson. The children will listen to a Muslim story from Abdul Malik at Easton Mosque.

PSHE

In PSHE the children will think about how to be a good friend. They will start to understand what bullying is and think about cyber bullying. They will be able to name ways to seek help, or help someone else, if they experience bullying online.

The children will also complete a lesson based around Friendship week. They will think about why the week has been named ‘Reach Out’ and create a colourful poster showcasing a way they can ‘Reach Out’.
